Tilak Varma Reflects on India Chase Against New Zealand

Tilak Varma expressed his pride after staying unbeaten to guide India through a difficult chase of 181 in the second T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch.

Partnerships and Chase Strategy

India found themselves struggling at 70 for 5 in the 11th over, requiring 111 runs from 55 balls as spinners Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell utilized assistance from the used surface. Tilak Varma credited conversations with head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak for giving him the belief to finish the match. Earning the Player-of-the-Match award for his unbeaten 51 off 26 deliveries, Tilak maintained his record of remaining unbeaten in 26 T20 chases, with his team winning every one of those encounters. He initially partnered with Naman Dhir, adding 42 runs off 25 balls for the sixth wicket before Dhir fell after scoring 31 off 17 balls with three sixes and a boundary.

Finish and Captain Reactions

Following Dhir’s dismissal, Tilak and fellow Hyderabadi player Nitish Kumar Reddy put on an unbroken 69 runs off just 30 balls, setting India’s highest seventh-wicket partnership in men’s T20Is. With 46 runs needed from the last three overs, the batters targeted New Zealand’s fast bowlers and secured the win with two balls remaining. India captain Shreyas Iyer praised the character shown by Tilak and Reddy, while also commending Naman Dhir as a comprehensive player for his contributions with both bat and ball, including a catch to remove Glenn Phillips for 70 off 43 balls. Iyer acknowledged that Santner and Bracewell bowled well to control the middle overs before India successfully navigated the chase.
