Ishan Kishan ruled out of second T20I against New Zealand

Batter Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of India’s second T20I against New Zealand due to a right adductor strain, according to a BCCI social-media statement released on Friday. The injury happened during the first T20I on Thursday, and the upcoming fixture will take place in Christchurch on Saturday. Because of the injury, India had to alter their batting order in the first T20I, moving Tilak Varma up to No. 3, which is Kishan’s regular spot. Kishan himself batted at No. 5 and got out for 1 off three balls, caught on the leg-side boundary off Mitchell Santner. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed during a press conference on Thursday night that Kishan has a groin niggle and is unlikely to play for one game.

Squad Replacements and Potential Changes

Kumar Kushagra, Kishan’s domestic team-mate at Jharkhand, is joining India’s T20I squad as cover. Kushagra was already present in Christchurch with the India A side. For the starting XI, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the likeliest candidate to take Kishan’s place. Sooryavanshi has remained on the bench for India’s last four T20Is following his appearances in the semi-final and final of their victorious Asian Games campaign. The squad’s only other batter is seam-bowling allrounder Shivam Dube, who does not represent a like-for-like replacement. Sitanshu Kotak stated that unless Kishan recovers completely according to the medical team, Sooryavanshi enters calculations as a batter and stands as one of the strongest persons who can play.

Series Context and Upcoming Matches

In the first T20I, India chased down a target of 226 to win by four wickets with two balls remaining. Opener Sanju Samson top-scored with 67 runs from 33 balls, while Shreyas Iyer contributed 42 runs in 28 balls and Naman Dhir finished with 42 not out from 15 balls. Christchurch’s Hagley Oval is hosting its second consecutive match of the five-T20I series. Following this fixture, the teams will travel to Wellington, Auckland, and Hamilton for the final three T20Is scheduled for October 27, October 30, and November 1. This five-match T20I series will subsequently be followed by five ODIs and two Test matches.
