Bhuvneshwar Kumar stated that he did not actively chase an India recall, attributing his return to the T20I setup to his strong performances in the IPL after last playing for the national side in November 2022.
IPL Success and Selection
Speaking following the conclusion of the third T20I in Wellington, where India secured a 3-0 series victory against New Zealand, the 36-year-old expressed his pride at representing India again. He explained that over the past four years he focused simply on whatever tournaments, challenges, fitness requirements, and cricket came his way without exclusively targeting an international comeback. Bhuvneshwar credited his return entirely to his standout displays across two consecutive Indian Premier League seasons for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he claimed 17 wickets in 2025 and 28 wickets in 2026, helping his franchise lift the title in both years and earning a spot in the five-match series squad in New Zealand.
Performance and Upcoming Fixtures
Earlier this year, Bhuvneshwar was also called up as cover for an injured Arshdeep Singh for the fifth match against West Indies in Bengaluru, though he did not bowl as rain washed out the fixture. In batter-friendly conditions across the three games in New Zealand, he has secured one wicket at an economy rate of 11.58 and an average of 139.00. Addressing his figures earlier in the series, bowling coach Morne Morkel sympathized with the bowler’s situation, pointing out the external expectations following a four-year absence and noting that Bhuvneshwar had to prepare with limited training due to the schedule before stepping back into international cricket.
With the series already secured, India will travel to Auckland for the fourth T20I on October 30 before concluding the series in Hamilton on November 1.
