Artificial intelligence impact on human thinking is becoming a central concern as advanced tools rapidly change workplaces and daily routines.
The Risks of Offloading Mental Effort
Neuroscientist David Rock points out that technology creates a subtle trap by giving people a greater sense of autonomy while inviting them to surrender their cognitive responsibilities. Organizations quickly adopted generative artificial intelligence tools after transitioning from an initial state of FOMO to what he describes as an AI hangover, frequently before understanding long-term consequences. While five to ten percent of workers use these systems properly to offload routine tasks, the majority take a different approach. Because the brain naturally seeks to conserve energy, people find it tempting to avoid mental effort entirely, which can lead to a gradual erosion of judgment and analysis skills.
Managing the Future of Technology and Society
Society remains in a settling-in period with artificial intelligence, lacking adequate social norms and guardrails much like the early days of automobiles. Mr. Rock notes that the technology also impacts human relationships, with individuals turning to chatbots for conversation and companionship despite research linking heavy chatbot reliance to increased loneliness. To adapt, he suggests practicing metacognition and maintaining a human in the lead approach so that individuals use systems to challenge perspectives rather than replace human judgment. As a keynote speaker at UN Skills Fest 2026 themed People at the Centre, Mr. Rock emphasizes that change has never been this fast, but it will never be this slow again.
