The Security Council is holding an open debate on Thursday regarding whether new technology can protect the world’s sea lanes amid changing threats to global shipping.
Emerging Technologies and Maritime Threats
Global shipping lanes face new dangers from cyberattacks, autonomous vessels, and low-cost drones. During the Thursday open debate, the Security Council is examining how these emerging technologies both endanger and protect global trade, seafarers, and energy and food supplies.
The worldwide shipping industry is currently experiencing a convergence of maritime crises described as genuinely unprecedented. Ships and seafarers are increasingly utilized as leverage in conflicts completely unrelated to them.
Yemen Conflict Impacts Shipping and Displacement

According to UN agencies reporting on Tuesday, nearly 100,000 individuals have been displaced since the fighting intensified earlier this month.
