Health Ministry Expands National Fatty Liver Disease Screening Guidelines

New Delhi | October 10: In response to clinical data indicating a sharp rise in metabolic disorders among urban and semi-urban adults, the Union Health Ministry has officially expanded its national non-communicable disease screening protocols to mandate early evaluation for Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD). Public healthcare dispensaries and primary wellness centers across all states will now incorporate abdominal ultrasound checks and routine liver enzyme screenings into regular health checkups.

The Rising Burden of Metabolic Liver Disease Medical researchers warn that sedentary workplace routines, high consumption of refined carbohydrates, ultra-processed seed oils, and hidden sugars in packaged foods have driven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to endemic proportions. Unlike alcohol-induced liver damage, MASLD progresses silently without symptoms until advanced stages like hepatic fibrosis or cirrhosis develop, catching patients unaware.

Recent community diagnostic studies revealed that nearly one in three urban Indian adults displays varying stages of hepatic steatosis, with a troubling rise in prevalence among individuals under forty who maintain normal body weights. Hepatologists emphasize that when identified in early stages, fatty liver infiltration is completely reversible through structured dietary interventions, sustained aerobic exercise, and healthy weight management without pharmaceutical reliance.

Primary Care Training and Diagnostic Upgrades Under the updated national guidelines, primary healthcare medical officers are receiving specialized training to evaluate non-invasive fibrosis scores (FIB-4) using standard routine blood work before referring patients to tertiary care hospitals. Public awareness drives will emphasize the liver’s role in regulating insulin resistance, systemic cardiovascular health, and long-term lipid metabolism.

Health authorities urge individuals diagnosed with pre-diabetes, high triglycerides, or abdominal adiposity to undergo routine abdominal screenings during their annual wellness consultations. Early lifestyle modifications remain the most effective tool to halt progressive metabolic organ damage.
