Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta Remembered for Bollywood Swagger

Portrait of filmmaker Sanjay Gupta

Sanjay Gupta was a notable filmmaker who wore his Hollywood influences on his sleeve and never felt the need to apologise for them, establishing himself as Bollywood’s own Hollywood obsessive with a distinctive visual style and a fascination with crime narratives.

Early Beginnings and Hollywood Inspiration

Gupta’s tryst with cinema began remarkably early when he worked in post-production and sound at barely 15 years old, eventually making his directorial debut with Aatish: Feel The Fire in 1994, which starred Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Pancholi, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor. American crime dramas, thrillers, Hong Kong action cinema and Korean revenge dramas heavily inspired his work, leading to his signature film Kaante in 2002, an ambitious multistarrer featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali and Kumar Gaurav plotting a bank robbery in Los Angeles.

Diverse Filmography and Passing

Throughout his career, Gupta directed several memorable movies including Musafir in 2004, the Oldboy adaptation Zinda in 2006, the legal thriller Jazbaa in 2015 starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Irrfan Khan, and Kaabil in 2017 featuring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam. In his later years, he ventured into streaming with Visfot in 2024 and explored sports and family drama in The Miranda Brothers the same year, before passing away on October 30, 2026, following an accidental fall at his Mumbai residence at the age of 57.
