UN chief urges world to connect the dots on global turmoil

View of earth from space at night

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the international community must connect the dots between street protests and global turmoil to ensure a safer world. Speaking in New York on Thursday ahead of an Egypt visit, António Guterres addressed public frustration in Europe and other regions over living costs, food, fuel, and higher interest rates. He condemned violence during demonstrations in countries like France and Italy while emphasizing that peaceful, legitimate grievances must not be ignored.

The El Niño of War and Global Inequality

Describing an expanding crisis, António Guterres warned of an El Niño of war, comparing intensifying conflicts to extreme weather patterns whose consequences travel further and faster. He highlighted regions like the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan where civilian infrastructure comes under fire, disrupting shipping, energy markets, and supply chains. These shocks affect an already unequal world where vulnerable populations choose between food and heat, while developing nations struggle between debt payments and investing in future development. Furthermore, the head of the UN Development Programme warned that approximately 800 million young people in developing economies may lack jobs soon without urgent action.

Regional Crises and Diplomatic Solutions

Addressing specific regional tensions, António Guterres condemned Houthi attacks against civilian targets in Saudi Arabia, escalation near Taiz in Yemen, and Israeli restrictions on essential aid in the Occupied Palestinian Territory ahead of winter. He also noted ongoing difficulties with the UN Security Council-backed Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict and daily attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank. He appealed for donor contributions of $450 million for the UN World Food Programme operations across Gaza and the West Bank for the next six months, while reiterating support for a two-State solution. His upcoming message in Egypt will focus on protecting civilians, halting war expansion, and creating political space for peace.
