India Women Suffer 4–0 Defeat Against Russia in Kolkata Friendly

The Indian women’s national football team suffered a 4–0 defeat against Russia in the first of two international friendlies at the rain-soaked Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Thursday, October 8.

The Blue Tigresses held their own for much of the first half, defending with discipline against a Russian side that enjoyed greater possession and territorial control. However, Russia’s attacking quality proved decisive as the visitors scored once before half-time and added three more goals in the second half.

Iana Sheina opened the scoring in the 40th minute with a precise finish to give Russia the lead. India attempted to remain organised defensively, with goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem making important saves to keep the hosts in the contest.

Russia increased the pressure after the interval, and substitute Kira Petukhova struck twice in quick succession in the 60th and 65th minutes. Iana Svistunova completed the scoring in the 81st minute, sealing a convincing win for the visitors.

India had opportunities of their own in the opening half. Malavika P came close to creating a scoring chance, while Lynda Kom Serto also threatened, but the hosts could not convert their opportunities into goals.

The match also provided valuable international experience for India’s emerging players. Head coach Crispin Chettri handed senior international debuts to six players: Babysana Devi Thingbaijam, Malati Munda, Cindy Colney, Shubhangi Singh, Dhurga Perumal and Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam. Monalisha made her first start for the senior side.

The result highlighted the challenge facing India against higher-ranked opposition, but the first-half defensive organisation and opportunities given to younger players offered lessons for the team moving forward.

India will have another opportunity to respond when the two sides meet again in the second friendly on October 11 in Kolkata.
