The United Nations marks 81 years of global cooperation this Saturday, commemorating over eight decades of efforts dedicated to fostering peace, human rights, and development worldwide.
History of United Nations Day
United Nations Day marks the moment the UN Charter entered into force in 1945. The international organization officially came into existence once the founding document gained ratification from a majority of its signatories, which included the five permanent members of the Security Council. Annual celebrations have taken place every October 24 since 1948. The organization’s core agenda remains focused on resolving conflicts through diplomacy, fighting poverty and hunger, advancing human rights, and providing critical assistance to populations impacted by disasters, conflicts, and displacement. Emerging from the aftermath of the Second World War, the vision of a fairer and more peaceful world brought countries together in 1945 under a shared framework for humanity.
Secretary-General Message and Early Relief Efforts
In his final message observing the occasion while leading the organization, Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the organization represents the principle that human survival relies on joint efforts to promote development, peace, and human rights. He pointed out significant global challenges today, such as warfare, climate change, growing inequalities, and technology evolving faster than governance frameworks. Describing the institution as a vital component of the global framework, he stressed that its presence is required now more than ever. Even before the formal establishment of the UN, an international initiative took shape during the Second World War with the creation of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in November 1943. Addressing widespread hunger, illness, devastation, and displacement, the agency supplied survival essentials and restored hope to millions attempting to reconstruct their lives, serving as an early model for international collaboration.
