$50 Million Refugee Appeal Launched by UNHCR

The UNHCR has launched a $50 million refugee appeal on Friday to assist nine million people in surviving the winter across Afghanistan, Ukraine, Syria, and Lebanon. Dominique Hyde of the UNHCR noted that this vital funding will supply essentials such as heaters, warm clothes, blankets, cash for fuel, and tape or tarpaulin for home repairs. The agency emphasized that needs remain extremely critical, particularly as Afghanistan manages approximately 6.5 million returnees in recent years, many of whom arrived involuntarily and must start completely from scratch. Meanwhile, Syria has seen roughly 3.6 million displaced individuals and refugees return to their damaged homes since December 2024, with about 15.6 million people inside Syria requiring humanitarian assistance. In Ukraine, the appeal aims to aid individuals like Svetlana in Dnipro, whose apartment was severely wrecked in a drone attack during the previous winter, leaving her and her son without a home.

Lebanese Crisis and Press Freedom Concerns

More than 300,000 people displaced since early March remain internally displaced in Lebanon, where the humanitarian crisis is far from over, according to the UN’s aid coordination office OCHA. UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated on Friday that ongoing Israeli military activity and presence in the south make returning home very difficult for civilians, despite their willingness. Across Southern Lebanon, fresh strikes, fires, and demolitions were reported both inside and outside the combat zone designated by Israel. Although nearly 970,000 individuals have returned to southern communities, their living conditions are dire, featuring damaged homes, disrupted basic services, and heightened economic challenges. In Nabatieh Governorate, insecurity and restricted access to agricultural land have severely limited the olive harvest, with farmers in certain villages forced to halt their work after only two days. To combat these issues, OCHA’s Lebanon Humanitarian Fund allocated $91 million to aid returnees, refugees, displaced populations, and other affected communities. In separate developments, UN human rights chief Volker Türk expressed profound concern and sadness on Friday regarding the closure of Novaya Gazeta, calling it a devastating blow to independent media in the Russian Federation.

Global Urban Housing Challenges

Urban stakeholders and government leaders gathered in Fuzhou, China, on Friday for World Cities Day to address the immense global housing crisis, highlighting urban regeneration as a key solution. According to UN-Habitat, up to 3.4 billion individuals globally endure inadequate housing conditions, which includes over one billion people residing in informal settlements and slums. Rising housing costs, aging infrastructure, and worsening climate change continue to increase pressure on urban residents and cities. Urban regeneration seeks to improve declining areas through environmental, economic, and social upgrades. The UN Secretary-General noted in a message that revitalizing existing urban zones helps create housing, upgrade infrastructure, and enhance public spaces to make cities more connected, inclusive, and resilient.
